30-Day Writing Challenge
Day 1: Why write? Here’s my bad advice freely given.
We all join Medium, hoping that someone will not only read about what’s on our minds but also enjoy what we choose to translate from our minds to our blogs. I think most of us secretly aspire to become top writers with top pay. It’s why so many of the stories about how to make money get the most reads.
But only some have the talent that makes a majority of us want to read what they write from start to finish. Admittedly, I haven’t yet been able to write a story like that. I have to play the “read-for-read” game, which is hardly adequate. The most that’s ever come from playing that game has been enough membership reads to make $2.00 on one story.
Then, there are those admirable folks who say:
“You should only write for yourself and because you enjoy it. Writing shouldn’t be about the money.”
Practically, writing shouldn’t be about the money. The amount of time that it takes to write a well-written story is hardly worth the money that a majority of us will make on Medium if we don’t enjoy writing. But really, how many of us are just writing to write?
